Simplifying Commutes

Objective

To redesign the Stanford Medicine Transportation Services website into a single, unified destination that could efficiently serve the diverse needs of patients, visitors, employees, and vendors across Stanford Health Care and Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital. The existing site had grown fragmented over time, with information spread across multiple pages and departments, leading to confusion for users seeking basic transit, parking, or commuting details.

Our objective was to bring order and accessibility to a highly functional, high-traffic system—transforming it into a clear, intuitive resource that could handle the logistical demands of a large medical institution while remaining approachable and human. The redesign needed to reduce complexity, modernize the digital experience, and strengthen the connection between the institution’s commitment to efficiency, sustainability, and patient care.

Solution

We approached the project through a lens of structure, clarity, and inclusivity, developing a clean, scalable interface that organizes a vast network of transportation information into logical, easy-to-navigate pathways. Each audience—patients, visitors, and staff—was given distinct entry points and tools tailored to their needs, ensuring fast access to essential resources like shuttle maps, parking permits, and commuter programs.

By reworking the information architecture, streamlining wayfinding, and prioritizing a mobile-first layout, we created a system that guides users naturally from question to answer. Interactive maps and contextual links allow users to find what they need in fewer steps, while clear visual hierarchy supports accessibility across devices and levels of digital literacy.

The final product balances institutional reliability with modern usability: a digital platform that simplifies daily operations, reinforces sustainability goals, and makes transportation—one of Stanford Medicine’s most complex logistical systems—feel effortless and cohesive.

Mobile Experience

As stated, we prioritized a mobile-first layout to ensure the site’s functionality remains seamless for users on the go. The mobile experience was designed for quick, real-world access—allowing patients, staff, and visitors to easily check shuttle routes, parking availability, or commuting programs from their phones while navigating between campuses. Streamlined navigation, concise content modules, and persistent wayfinding tools keep information accessible in motion. The result is a responsive platform that feels as intuitive in hand as it does on desktop.
